Step It Up is a free after-school arts program founded by Oakland School for the Arts in 2014 focused on connecting with & preparing BIPOC students from Oakland and surrounding areas for successful entrance into OSA. Last year, we partnered with The People’s Conservatory
, and are proud to continue that partnership into the 2021-22 school year.
Our mission is to support OSA’s diversity and outreach commitments by making arts education accessible to underserved & marginalized Oakland youth. BIPOC students in 5th-8th grade attending specific Title 1 Oakland schools
can apply for the Step It Up program.
The Step It Up program will meet from 5-7 pm on the following 14 dates:
- October 4th (first day of classes), 11th (parent info meeting), 18th, & 25th
- November 1st (last day for new applicants), 8th, 15th, & 29th (Hanukkah - excused absence)
- December 6th, 13th (audition info meeting),
- Januray 10th, 24th (5th & 6th grade application info meeting), & 31st
- February 7th
*Please note that the Dance program meets with the Savage Dance Company 3 days a week. More information upon application submittal. The Instrumental Music program will also be meeting 3 days a week.
8th grade students who have attended at least 10 out of 14 SIU classes will receive special consideration at the 2022 OSA audition.
