BIO:   Ms. Smith is ecstatic to be beginning her 8th school year at OSA! She is a 2nd generation middle school teacher, her parents met while teaching. She grew up in California, graduated from high school in Connecticut. She is a graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta, GA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics.  She earned her teaching credential from California State University of Hayward in 2004.  She re-entered the teaching world after a short assignment teaching high school math and Algebra in 1993 prior to the birth of her son. Prior to teacher she worked for over 15 years in the banking industry in Operations Management, Client Technical Support and Cash Management Sales working for Mellon Bank, The Bank of California and Silicon Valley Bank. Teaching Philosophy A student’s emotional state plays a huge role on their success or lack thereof in math.  Math has a language unto itself and students need to be taught to approach the higher-level communication and thinking to describe the mathematical processes used in preparation for Algebra.             As a teacher, I am happy to present concepts in multiple methods to allow students with varied learning styles to capture and internalize the information.  I love figuring things out and have learned how to use math skills for everyday life.  I hope to show your child a whole new side of math using games and other unusual ways to practice and learn.
