Updates from Class 2009

People say that college is so different, a whole other world compared to high school, and in some ways they are right about that. It's very much true that you are treated like an adult-- no one reminds you that your homework is due, or that you have to do the dishes, or that maybe it's time to do some laundry so you have something clean to wear to the LGBT student mixer tonight (I learned that one the hard way a few months back). Every quarter or semester, your schedule completely changes and it's up to you to keep track of it and figure out where the heck you're trying to get to! Last quarter, I had no classes before 10:00 am, and now I'm up at 7:00 to get to an 8:00 class-- A big difference! But if it's a class you're genuinely interested in, that sure wakes you up fast.

The other difference is the people. Everyone is very much focused on their own work (except for the students who are here to party. I'm not sure what they're focused on, or if they're focused at all) and therefore there's not a whole lot of drama to get caught up in. I'm not living in a dorm, so I can't speak for those students who have roommates, but overall there's very much this mindset of "we are here to learn, and we're paying a lot of money to go here, so why should we waste our time with drama and cliques and the like?"

I'm still keeping up with my art, although not nearly as much given how busy I've been. The wild flora here in Santa Cruz is incredible, and I've been doing a lot of botanical illustration. Once I get it set up, people can find some of my current work, along with the programs I've written for my Comp Sci classes at my UCSC website: [ http://people.ucsc.edu/~kebruce ]http://people.ucsc.edu/~kebruce. I'm also working on starting up a blog about how to cook on a student's budget and schedules. More details about that to come.

All in all, life is pretty good, and I'm thankful for the skills and experiences I had at OSA. While I don't think that anything really prepares you for college quite like... well, college, I definitely had a decent foundation. Go class of '09!
