Kent Overshown, Class 2006
"Kent Overshown, University of Michigan Class of 2010, is named the winner of the AEA/Alan Eisenberg Award Scholarship. He is the fourth graduating student to receive the award, which was created by former AEA Executive Director Alan Eisenberg, an alumnus of the school. The award, in the amount of $5,000, is given to a graduating senior in the University's Musical Theater Program."
"Since graduating OSA in 2006 I have attended the University of Michigan where I will be graduating with a BFA in Musical Theatre in May of 2010. In addition to playing various roles such as Tom Collins in RENT, Horse in THE FULL MONTY, and Arkadi Cheidze in Bertolt Brecht's THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE at the University, I have also had the opportunity to work at the St. Louis MUNY (The oldest and largest outdoor theatre in the country, seating close to 11,000 patrons) for the past 3 summers while working with names such as Beth Leavel, Georgia Engel, Eric Kunze, Jeff McCarthy, Robert Westenberg, Daniel Reichard, Will Chase, Lisa Howard, Ken Page, Simone, and Kate Baldwin, and directors like Marc Bruni and Daniel Goldstein, and noted choreographers such as Liza Gennaro and Darren Lee. This past summer I had the opportunity to audition for the recently closed revival of RAGTIME on Broadway and made it through callbacks for the understudy of the leading role of Coalhouse Walker Jr. Though I did not make the Broadway show, I will have the opportunity to fulfill the dream of playing that role at the University of Michigan this spring in our production of RAGTIME (http://www.music.umich.edu/performances_events/productions/09-10/ragtime.htm)! I am now preparing for my Senior Showcase, in which my class of 17 students fly out to New York City to perform in front of a host of noted casting directors and agents, in the hopes either procuring a job on Broadway or booking anBre agent"

Amanee Hearne - Class of 2006

Amanee is graduating from Spelman College in the Spring 2010 and just accepted a salary job with a business firm in New York.

Alex Hinton, Class 2006
I am graduating from Columbia with a B.A. in Psychology this May.

I have applied to PhD programs in Developmental Psychology at Stanford, UC Berkeley, and Indiana University. and will hear back from them in March/April.

I have also applied to Teach for America, with OUSD as my #1 school district choice, as I want to give back to the community that brought me up. Ideally, I want to teach 4th-8th grades (Math/Science for middle school)

I have also been working on two research projects with Prof. Patricia Stokes of Barnard, one on problem solving variability across age brackets, and another that is exploring how the use of the Japanese counting system affects the learning and understanding of mathematical and numerical concepts in kindergartners (it helps A LOT!)

Tasion Kwamilele, Class 2006

Hello all! I just wanted to update the OSA staff with news that I believe is worthy that shows the great foundation and academic excellence that OSA instills in its students. Upon graduation, I will be attending UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. I have also been awarded the Graduate Opportunity Program Fellowship which pays for all of my tuition and fees as well as I will be given a $5,000 stipend each semester.

Yay to OSA for instilling a mentality to only strive for greatness!

Updates from Class 2007

Caelayn Edwards, Class 2007

"As of June 10th 2011, I Caelayn Brown will be a graduate of UCLA, receiving my BA degree in Theatre, Film and Television. The journey to this point was not an easy one, but it was without a doubt made easier by the fact that I received the best pre-profession training from OSA that a young arts student can be given. I remember being a student at OSA and wondering why I had to take certain class that I thought were irrelevant, but once I entered UCLA's prestigious acting program, I found out that all the training and technique I had acquired from my teachers at OSA, put me head and shoulders above my peers at UCLA. Since being in college and being exposed to all sorts of new avenues in arts and entertainment, I have changed career paths and am now pursuing a career in Casting for Film and Television. I took my first casting internship back in 2009 and have since gone on to do casting for a national commercial campaign, music videos, and an independent feature film. I just ended an extensive Casting internship with the ABC Network, where I worked on several current TV shows and pilots. Upon graduating, I will be continuing to pursue my career in Casting, where I hope to continue to provide great acting opportunities for talented and deserving actors. I would be remiss if I didn't give a big thank you to OSA and all of the faculty and staff that were there in the early years of the school. I am so proud of how far the school has come since I was there (when we were in the parking lot behind the FOX) and I know the students there will continue a great legacy. My advice to the current students and those to come, is that they never take for granted the amazing opportunity they are being afforded and that they utilize all of the resources they are being given during their time there, because it will certainly come in handy in the future. Thank you OSA!"

Annie Freitas, Class 2007
"Hey Mr. Smith! Thanks for all of your support! My aunt made a tumbler with graduation photos ( http://scripps2011.tumblr.com/page/2 ) Also, I graduated, from Scripps College,  with a double major in Theater and Psychology with honors (Cum Laude) and I completed two theses. My thesis for psychology was a study of the experiences of transgender students at single sex and co-Ed institutions (title: Beyond Acceptance: The Experiences of Transgender Students at Women's Colleges). For my second thesis I started a theater program in a local juvenile hall and we read and wrote an adaptation of Othello by William Shakespeare (title: The Othello Project: Contextualizing Individual Actions and Empowering Incarcerated Youth Through Theater). I also received honors on my theater thesis. This summer I will be completing Teach For America training in Atlanta, Georgia before moving to New Orleans, LA to teach Fourth grade at Harriet Tubman Elementary School. Please keep in touch and I'll be sure to send you updates along the way! Thanks again for everything! Talk to you soon!"

Updates from Class 2009

Katherine Bruce, Class 2009
I'm smack-dab in the middle of my first year at UC Santa Cruz, where I'm double majoring in Linguistics and Computer Science. There is definitely a lot of work! One of my teachers from OSA-- I don't remember who, unfortunately-- had said that in college, you learn in ten weeks what it would take a whole school year to learn in high school-- they are right! The time management skills I learned at OSA have really helped me balance work and play. Having to budget my time between schoolwork and artwork taught me some really valuable skills.

People say that college is so different, a whole other world compared to high school, and in some ways they are right about that. It's very much true that you are treated like an adult-- no one reminds you that your homework is due, or that you have to do the dishes, or that maybe it's time to do some laundry so you have something clean to wear to the LGBT student mixer tonight (I learned that one the hard way a few months back). Every quarter or semester, your schedule completely changes and it's up to you to keep track of it and figure out where the heck you're trying to get to! Last quarter, I had no classes before 10:00 am, and now I'm up at 7:00 to get to an 8:00 class-- A big difference! But if it's a class you're genuinely interested in, that sure wakes you up fast.
